    I bought one of these for descending trees, but I'm finding I just rappel with the prussic/hitch-climber. Should I be using a figure8 for a smoother rappel perhaps? I've also got a fall arrest device (Petzl ASAP) so it's getting kind of cluttered down there.

    • @WesSpurTreeEquipment
      @WesSpurTreeEquipment 4 місяці тому

      The figure 8 is more of a legacy tool for tree care. Like you've found, it's easy just to come down on your hitch. A figure 8 or a U-rack, J-rack, or other friction device sees action on very long descents, when you would be generating a lot of heat on your hitch from all that friction.

Later on I spray brak clean on some of it to c if it would cut it with out melting it , it instantly desolves pitch . So I took 6 inches of the rope and soaked it for 2 days in brake clean and then dissected the peace and there was no damage to the strands! Would like your input.

      Hey there, to give a responsible answer to that question, we would need a staff chemist in addition to our arborist! I don't know what is in the cleaner you use and if it will affect nylon or polyester, the two main fibers in most ropes, or if there are other fibers in the rope you're climbing on. I also don't know if the chemicals might affect the strength of the fibers without leaving visible signs of damage. But why risk it? Sap Zaprrr is safe for ropes and works great. We'll send you a free bottle in a $75 order, too ;) Happy climbing, and stay safe.

    Thanks Dave! When I descend SRT static after climbing w/ascenders like a Petzl Texas system, i've been backing up the Fig. 8 w/a Munter hitch below, tied to one of my saddle hip rings. I'll give the prusik a try👍

      @@WesSpurTreeEquipment thanks, I was looking for adapter to work with a quick detach . I was looking at IRONSEA WINCH DRILL BIT adapter that uses a 3/8 socket drive and I already purchased the 3/8-7/16 socket adapter for my qd drill But I fight can go straight from my cutie drill to the winch of course that would be less cumbersome ........also just my two cents , I personally would prefer asystem with an integrated Bullard on top of the winch , it would also protect the winch from any falling debris. The GRCS plate just needs to be a little longer to accommodate it , wouldn't change the cost much maybe $400 , Also I would pay extra to get a all brass winch , I wish that would have been an option , in the long run it would be a heritage tool And it would not drop in value And hard use of the brass just makes it look better. Overall it would be a better value In the long term. Also I use an Ancra 49723-10 Silver Overdrive Ratcheting Cap. I would recommend you trying it and selling it with GRCS parts , it's a good upgrade.

      Hi Jim, talked to Dave, and if you mean the plate at the base of the winch, then yes. Let us know if we misunderstood the question. Stay safe!

      Hey there, most folks climb trees using 11mm - 13mm ropes (7/16" to 1/2").

    Is this a joke.? There's no way in hell I'm shelling out another 250 bucks on another harness again within 5 years. At least on the money I'm making now.
